Orvakal, about 22km from Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh is well known for its rocks mainly of silica and quartz formations amongst pools of water, its Palaeolithic age rock paintings and the Orvakul Mandal Podupu Lakshmi Ikya Sangam (OMPLIS) a federation of 10,000 empowered women who have become the harbingers of successful women empowerment programmes.
The eleven days Immersion Training of MSRLM staff at Orvakal Mandal Pudupu Lakhsmi Ikya Sangham (OMPLIS), the federation of the SHGs in Kurnool District, Andhra Pradesh was very helpful in capacity building and a number of good practices were learned during the training. During this short span of time, the staff had an intense study on the history, process, challenges, and activities of several SHGs and conducted case studies on some successful SHG members. The entire training processes consist of classroom teaching, field visit, presentation and sharing of our learning.

The erstwhile Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozagar Yojana (SGSY) has been restructured into the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) based on comprehensive studies and reviews of SGSY which have brought into focus several shortcomings of SGSY like vast regional variations in mobilization of rural poor; insufficient capacity building of beneficiaries; insufficient investments for building community institutions; and weak linkages with banks leading to low credit mobilization. SGSY has been found to be more successful wherever systematic mobilization of the poor into Self Help Groups (SHGs), their capacity building and skill development have been taken up in a systematic manner.
